Whirlwind, Jantzen Beach, Portland, OR
According to Robert Cartmell's, The Incredible Scream Machine book, the Whirlwind coaster (pictured above), was designed by Harry Traver and opened at Jantzen Beach in 1929. This type of ride was said to have been one of a series of Traver's Whirlwind Racers - Third Rail Racing Coasters that operated in the United States and in the Philippines during the late 1920's. The Jantzen Beach Whirlwind (or Whirl-wind) operated at the park from 1929 to sometime in the 1950's. From phots taken of this ride, it looked to be more of a portable family style of coaster than a typical wooden coaster. |
